Sore Throat Remedy: Limoncello Green Tea

in Homemaker, Recipes on 18/09/16

limoncello green teaA sore throat can be a maddening experience, at least for me. As soon as I feel a tickle in my throat, I’m popping sore throat drops and vitamin C tablets like candy, and I drink so much green tea that I only drink green tea when I’m not feeling well. Over the last year, I have concocted the best sore throat remedy through combining some simple ingredients.

The Back Story

During a trip to Italy last summer, my sister had a sore throat after being around so many smokers. She doesn’t have asthma, but cigarette smoke irritates her throat. My cousin and I were also experiencing mild sore throats. The pharmacies had closed for the night, so I looked up some natural remedies online. A quick google search led to recommendations of honey, green tea, ginger, and lemon as all-natural remedies for sore throats and/or allergy treatments.

I decided to concoct my own recipe by combining these ingredients. Well, I didn’t have any ginger or lemons, but we had a bottle of Limoncello.

So, I brewed a pot of green tea, sweetened it with honey, and splashed a dollop of Limoncello into a mug before going to bed.

Wow! My sore throat was gone!

I slept soundly through the night and felt refreshed in the morning. My itchy throat was gone. My sister and cousin agreed that the tea had relieved their symptoms as well.

Since that trip, I have continued to make this sore throat remedy anytime I feel an itch in my throat. During the day at work, I use lemon juice instead of Limoncello. I think the alcohol in the Limoncello makes the brew more effective, but straight lemon juice is great alternative for making this sore throat remedy for kids or during the work day. At home, I have grated ginger or dashed powdered ginger into my tea. The ginger is helpful, but I don’t like the taste as much.

Here is my step-by-step instructions:

Heat a cup of water over the stove or in the microwave. Steep a green tea bag for 3-5 minutes. After removing the tea bag, add two tablespoons of honey and an one ounce of Limoncello or lemon juice.  Sip while hot!

It’s effective and all-natural way to combat a sore throat!

At our house it seems as if we have sore throats off and on between October and February. I will definitely try this next time!

I love to have lemon juice in tea for sore throats too. For some reason I can’t drink green tea because it makes me nauseous. I don’t think I have had limoncello, but I want to try it because I’ve heard it is good.

I am down with any remedy that has alcohol, LOL! But really, it does seem to work well, and the green tea sounds like the perfect compliment to it!

Mmm.. I love limoncello and have tea on a regular basis, so I love this idea! I’ll keep this in mind now that it’s getting colder out and my annual sore throat is waiting to catch me haha

We got a virus earlier this month, luckily no sore throat with it, but I know that winter will bring something sore throat related. Pinned.
